![]() ![]() In an appearance at the Hay Festival, Mr Olivieri was asked by an audience member if visiting Powis Castle would “be a lesser experience if the National Trust conducted a reparation exercise and returned its South Asian artefacts to South Asia”. The Indian Government recently indicated that it wishes to repatriate artefacts taken to Britain during the days of Empire. The treasures are housed in Powis Castle in Wales. The Trust’s collection includes more than 1,000 items brought back from South and East Asia, including many amassed by Clive of India and his son, Edward. ![]() René Olivieri said the organisation is preparing a policy which will look at the provenance of items in its collection, balancing that against the public benefit of keeping them in the UK. The head of the National Trust has opened the door to the restitution of its colonial artefacts - raising the prospect of Clive of India’s treasures being returned. ![]()
