![]() ![]() I’ll try not to spoil anything for any of the books but at least you’ve been warned. Basically just scroll as far as you care to read. I’ve decided to write a giant review for the series (broken down book by book though) rather than post four separate reviews. I first read this series in 8 th grade and then five more times since then because I’m just a huge fan. I fell in love with this series, you might not feel the same way, but that’s fine. I’ll take any disagreement as a sign that we’re not brainwashed and who could be mad about that? A friend checked it out from the school library and said she liked it so each time she finished a book she gave it to me so I could read it. I’m just glad that I read these pre-Goodreads because I had no expectations. Some people just didn’t get into these books or felt that it didn’t live up to the hype, that’s fine. If you’re looking for someone to cast as either Shay or Tally I 1200% volunteer!) This series is seriously one of my top favorites! I still cannot believe that they haven’t turned them into movies yet. ![]() *This post contains 4 separate reviews (Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras) for the series so scroll with caution* YA Fiction | Sci-Fi | Dystopian ![]()

Quite a dark conclusion, and not an August we would want to share. THE STREET OF CROCODILES (****+ overall for this book) There's a little Kafka here, a little Poe, but mostly a lot of Schulz. Reading them one after another is perhaps detrimental to their enjoyment-however, the links between the stories, and some of the meaning, would be missed if you don't. At times, in the second set of stories, there is almost too much awareness in the narrative of the artificiality of it all, which detracts from the effect, but for the most part, each of these stories is an escape into a rather lonely mind exploring a world of its own creation. ![]() It is hard to characterize Schulz's writing, but in placing one of these stories in their collection, THE WEIRD, Jeff and Ann Vandermeer certainly provide one viable definition. ![]() Even commonplace events morph into fantastical occurrences. Very little in these stories can be taken literally. They are concerned with the slipperiness of time, the weather and seasons, human imperfection, and limitless imagining. Schulz, a Polish Jew, published only the two volumes of fiction collected here before his shooting by a Gestapo soldier in 1942. ![]() ![]() ![]() Geraldine was attacked somewhere near the ceremonial structure that gives the novel its title, and the land thereabouts is a jigsaw puzzle of state, federal and tribal territories, each with different laws and different officials empowered to enforce them. ![]() ![]() As Erdrich explains in her afterword, conflicts of jurisdiction and sovereignty have long made it difficult to prosecute non-Native men for the rape of Native-American women on or around reservations. There is the assault on Geraldine – not just the question of who committed it, but almost as important, where. The Round House, winner of the 2012 National Book Award for fiction, is a fusion of two stories, although that seedling image suggests an apter term: grafting. Soon, father and son will learn that Geraldine, Joe's lovely mother, has been brutally raped, and the different ways the boy and the man respond to this trauma can be construed from this seemingly mundane beginning. The symbolism is a shade heavy-handed, a fault that has been found with Erdrich's books in the past. For the first time ever, Joe's old man, a judge on an Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota in the late 1980s, tires of the task before the boy does and leaves him to finish up. A t the beginning of The Round House, the novel's 13-year-old narrator, Joe, is helping his father pry out tree seedlings that have lodged in the cement-block foundation of his family's house. ![]() ![]() ![]() Surprised, I guess?įor myself, I found that there’s a lot less dividing shamanistic philosophy from Jewish or Christian philosophy, I think, than it’s easy to assume, you know. I mean, it’s like, if you watched C-SPAN for four hours (was a pirate making you keep going?) and then at the end complained that it was boring, that it was ultimately trivial and ordinary or whatever, that it was petty and material, it’s like-well, you knew that it was C-SPAN, right? Surely you knew that that was one way of looking at C-SPAN? And yet you were…. Apparently a LOT of people thought that shamanistic philosophy and non-ordinary reality was going to have the same standards of thinking as vote-counting, obviously the exclusive pinnacle of human existence, right. ![]() What about Plato’s Republic? Is that “fiction” or “non-fiction”? What about the last chapter or book in Plato’s Republic? For some people, it’s primitive garbage, but for me, it was the most rewarding part of the book, the WHY of philosophy.Īnd, you know, I’m going to try not to whine and spit like a kid in the chess club who gets bullied by the basketball team and makes it worse-I don’t mean that like as how you guys are, (basketball, bullying), but just about me (‘the importance of being earnest’, although I haven’t read that book)-it’s…. I don’t know whether or not it makes sense to say whether it’s “fiction” or “non-fiction”, right. For me, this is shamanistic philosophy, you know. ![]() ![]() ![]() My advice if you have never read any of Robin's books: Start with "Beauty" or "The Blue Sword" or "The Hero and the Crown". I think "Beauty" was the romantic ideal of an unmarried woman in her 20s, and "Rose Daughter" is the romantic ideal of a married woman in her 40s. I can see now that "Rose Daughter" has much to offer. I did not reread "Rose Daughter" again until this audio version came out. ![]() When this book first came out on paper, I got it immediately, but I was Very fond of "Beauty" and I think I was jealous on its behalf. But this story is fairly different in many ways. They are both telling the same fairy tale, after all. Oddly, many years and books after "Beauty" Robin chose to tell the story of Beauty and the Beast again. Her first book is entitled, "Beauty" and is the story of Beauty and the Beast. Robin McKinley is one of my favorite authors in the whole world. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer - and every bit as dangerous.
